I'm starting my 2nd guitar build soon. The first one I bent my sides with a pipe and I want try a side bending machine for the next one. I found a 6 x 36 1200watt heat blanket that comes with a controller that ranges from 0 to 200 degrees Celsius. Will that work? It's only $90

It would for my purposes as long as it heats up quickly. You don't want to be waiting all day to bend. My max. temp when I'm bending is 375*F. 200* C = approx 392*F

It should be fine, especially at that price! Just make sure it is the correct voltage. I would guess you want 120V

Yeah it's 120v. I was going to get a surface temp gauge also and should I do 1 or 2 slats and what kind and thickness?

Folks like to different things when bending. My sandwich is: slat, brown paper, wood, brown paper, slat, blanket. I spritz my wood enough to keep it from scorching. Bending goes: 220*F lower bout, 270* upper bout, 300* waist, take it up to 375*, set my controller to variable (I use a router controller to vary my heat) and gradually over 12-15 minutes bring the temp down to 220*. Turn everything off and let it cool to room temp before I remove the side.

Edit: I use a fox style bender

Hopefully it is the Keenovo brand one. Their biggest market is for skateboard bending. They are good quality, better manufactured than lmi. Mine gets to temp in 2 minutes.
They have 2 controllers, one uses a thermal switch with rotary knob, the other is digital. The digital one uses a sensor in the heater, so is more tightly controlled.
The version with rotary control has a bimetallic heat control switch, so it is not sensing the blanket temperature. Still better control than a heated pipe

+1

I use the rotary knob type in the uke side bender I built. I use the digital one on my purchased side bender that the original blanket failed on it. Works great!

+1 on Keenovo with digital controller. Bought one a few months ago.
Heats fast and heat control is very accurate. The price is right.

You will need the 6"x 36" for side bending. You can also use a 6"x 6" for waists and a 6 x 12 for cutaways.
